Gerald Folkerts – 1958 – 2009

On May 30th, 2009, at the age of 51, Gerald Folkerts ended his nine month battle with brain cancer. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family and close friends. We miss his friendship, his insight, his art and his company on the journey.

Steve Bell and all of us at Signpost were delighted to help present a gallery showing of a collection of Gerald’s work January 29 to February 1 of this year. Gerald’s health was holding up better than anyone had anticipated (he had been told that he might not make it to Christmas/08), and he was able to not only be present for this honouring of his work but also to actively participate in the event. It is a shared memory we will all cherish in the time to come. We are grateful for the moments we were able to have together, and for the art he gifted us with. It serves as a constant and compelling reminder of not only what Gerald did, but who he was.

Gerald’s funeral was at 11 am on June 6th, 2009 at Covenant Christian Reformed Church. Family and friends shared in a celebration of Gerald’s life.
