This is SUCH an interesting and moving album!
Lyrically, it is obvious that Jon has a worshipping heart. Indeed, he has for years faithfully served the Church from this place. But here there are also songs of deep lament, longing, love, introspection and good fun. Stylistically, the songs swing effortlessly between straight-up, ‘feel-good’ rock ‘n roll [think D.C. Talk] to more subtle sophistications reminiscent of Sting and Tom Waits. There are also tender acoustic moments like what one might expect from a Chris Rice or, perhaps even, a Steve Bell album. Co-produced by Olaf Pyttlik, the production is quite intriquing with enough tasteful nuances to keep a discriminating listener endlessly entertained. Broken Drum is the fourth of Jon’s solo projects and it is excellent. It’s personal, it’s worshipful, it’s folksy and it rocks. I laughed, cried. What can I say? I think it’s safe to call this album a gem.
