Last year we introduced you to artist, author and outreach worker Tim Huff with his first book Cardboard Shack Beneath the Bridge, an illustrated children’s book about homelessness that has since won the Word Guild Canadian Writer’s Award in the Children’s book category. (see catalogue). This year we have Tim’s new book Bent Hope (for adults). Tim is a tireless advocate for Canada’s homeless and Bent Hope is a collection of thoughtfully written stories about the homeless youth in Toronto he has come to know as friends. Tim has an unusually heightened sense of the dignity of the other, and that sensitivity serves the book and it’s subjects well. This is an important book for sure, but a touching one as well. It would be a feat in itself to read it and look indifferently at others afterward, homeless or otherwise, because ultimately the book points to the One who has called such marvelous creatures into being.
