Glen Soderholm - This Bright Sadness

Ordinary Places - Gayle Salmond

Glen Soderholm - This Bright Sadness

NEW RELEASE!

To listen to song samples and buy Glen’s album, click here.

On this new CD, Glen forges a lean and rootsy sound that features his emotional singing and incisive lyurics. The theme of the recording is lament and hope found in the mystery of suffering as he reflects on the loss of several family members in the last year.

Standout tracks include ‘Out of Nothing’, a stripped-down version of Bob Dylan’s ‘ Everything is Broken’ , and ‘These are the Ones’ - a haunting elegy for the people of Ethiopia, co-written with Steve Bell.

The Loop - Jacob Moon

We have two new releases from Jacob Moon this year. The Loop is a live concert performance album like only Jacob can pull off. Jacob is an absolute master of his craft and this recording documents that fact rather nicely. The song selection is stunning – a couragous mix of Jacob originals and some rather unlikely covers of songs by the likes of Rush, Peter Gabriel, Josh Redman and Kurt Elling. Somehow, Jacob employs all his interpretive skills, guitar prowess and sonorous vocals to bring in an album that is internally integrated, moving and often exhilarating.

The Hymn Project - Buller, Balzer, Aichele

To listen to song samples and buy this album, click here.

Often, contemporary recordings of the hymns make the baffling error of attempting to improve on what has already proved itself excellent. Not so with this project. Veteran musician Jon Buller has teamed up with singer/guitarists Nolan Balzar, Kevin Aichle and producer Olaf Pytlick to gift us with fresh, simple acoustic, harmonically strong, excellently performed and lovingly offered renditions of songs that weren’t broke in the first place. Listening to this recording one get the definite impression that this is not born of mere nostalgia or sentiment, but rather a profound gratitude for a faith handed down and received with a determination to pass along what has so capably nurtured and sustained.

Bent Hope - Tim Huff

Bent Hope - Tim Huff

Bent Hope - Tim Huff

Last year we introduced you to artist, author and outreach worker Tim Huff with his first book Cardboard Shack Beneath the Bridge, an illustrated children’s book about homelessness that has since won the Word Guild Canadian Writer’s Award in the Children’s book category. (see catalogue). This year we have Tim’s new book Bent Hope (for adults). Tim is a tireless advocate for Canada’s homeless and Bent Hope is a collection of thoughtfully written stories about the homeless youth in Toronto he has come to know as friends. Tim has an unusually heightened sense of the dignity of the other, and that sensitivity serves the book and it’s subjects well. This is an important book for sure, but a touching one as well. It would be a feat in itself to read it and look indifferently at others afterward, homeless or otherwise, because ultimately the book points to the One who has called such marvelous creatures into being.

Ordinary Places - Gayle Salmond

Ordinary Places - Gayle Salmond

Ordinary Places - Gayle Salmond

NEW RELEASE!

To listen to song samples and buy Gayle’s album, click here.

You might recognize “Salmond” as the last name of producer Roy Salmond who seems to be a recurring personality in Signpost projects. Well… several of us have known for years that Roy’s wife Gayle is a gifted songwriter and singer in her own right, but that she has been mis-spending her life teaching children instead of singing her songs for us (kidding of course). However, the time has come and Gayle has released her debut CD. Reminiscent of Emmy Lou Harris and Sam Phillips, Gayle has her own voice as a singer and songwriter, revealing a unique intuition within an orthodox faith. Particularly arresting are her songs Sophia, a gorgeous hymn to Wisdom personified in Christian tradition as the woman Sophia, and The Lorica, an adaptation of St. Patrick’s Trinitarian prayer of the same name. Incidentally, The Lorica also appears on my new album Devotion.

Some of you will remember Rei Hotoda as the conductor for my symphony concerts across Canada last year. Rei is not only a celebrated conductor, but a gifted and renowned concert pianist specializing in Asian Avant-garde.

Apparitions (Rei’s first solo recording) features the previously unrecorded works of nine contemporary Asian composers including three Canadians: Vivian Fung, Chan Ka Nin, and Vincent Ho (Composer In Residence of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra).

Though strangely contemplative and beautiful, this is definitely challenging music - especially for those of us unfamiliar with anything outside the standard Western repertoire, but it really does reward attentive and repeated listening. Every effort I’ve made to engage the idioms of another culture has not only expanded my capacity for beauty but for other-ness as well, ultimately glorifying God whose nuanced beauty is inexhaustible. Give it a try!

Mombacho - Mike Janzen

Mombacho - Mike Janzen

New Release!

Mombacho - Mike Janzen

Everybody loves Mike! Seriously. Several of you will know Mike as the astonishing and delight-full piano player who has been accompanying me on tour for the last several years. Mike’s gifts as an invaluable accompanist/ sideman/arranger are well celebrated. Sometimes a photo seems to capture the essence of a person. In like manner, an outstanding recording can accomplish the same. This CD firmly establishes that part of the “essence of Mike” is the tremendous jazz writer, stylist and band leader he is. Deeply embedded in this excellent collection of (mostly) original songs are Mike’s reverence, humor, compassion and joy. His is a rare and infectious gift.

NEWLY RELEASED

This Christmas

by Jacob Moon

produced by Roy Salmond

Jacob teams up with veteran west-coast producer Roy Salmond to deliver a fresh recording of standard and not-yet-standard Christmas fare.  When covering other’s material, Jacob always brings something new and delightful to the table without alienating traditional offerings.  And when offering something new, the new has the ring of tried and true.  A particular highlight is the Jacob Moon/Glen Soderholm original that lends the album it’s name - This Christmas.

Where We Were - Kerri Woelke

Where We Were - Kerri Woelke

Where We Were - Kerri Woelke

New Release!

Where We Were - Kerri Woelke

produced by Jordan Jackiew & Brian James

To listen to song samples and buy Kerri’s albums, click here.

Kerri’s sophomore project is an affecting collection of song stories documenting a relationship under duress and a story that is not over. There is an ache to these songs and this recording that is honest and lovely – reflecting the reality of the broken human condition lived consciously in the presence of God. Kerri’s unassuming, rootsy style both as a vocalist and songwriter is wonderfully captured by producer Jordan Jackiew and imaginatively supported by multiinstrumentalist and long time friend Brian James. We’re very pleased to be a part of Kerri’s burgeoning career and contribution.

Steve Bell's New Worship Album

Throughout my career, folks have told me that there is a consistent theme or quality of worship to the music I record - so I suppose it should not be surprising that I would eventually release an album that is deliberately and self consciously a “worship album.” And this new one, Devotion, would be it. After last year’s gargantuan effort to produce the Symphony CD and tour (which was wonderfully received - thank you) I thought, we all thought, I’d take a break and lay low for awhile. However, there has been a growing body of new, contemplative worship songs sung at my home church in Winnipeg (www.stbenedictstable.ca) that has been deeply nourishing while at the same time creating in me a compelling sense that they needed to be recorded. So in January, still somewhat wearied from the previous year, I showed up in Vancouver at the doorstep of producer Roy Salmond with a pocket full of songs and no real idea how best to proceed. Over the course of the next several months Roy and I pursued and developed a creative rapport that has resulted in what I think is a wonderful, accessible and fresh collection of simple song-prayers offered with respect to the same liturgical arc of worship that feeds us week after week, year after year, century after century. One never knows till after the fact if one’s goals have been achieved, but I hope this album will stand on it’s own as a listenable work while at the same time effecting worship of the ineffable God whose beauty is arresting and whose wisdom and love are inexhaustible.
